3 of 3 people found this review helpful. Great Collection of Poetry, Poems & Stories   (2009-07-25)

This collection shows Wright's range as he tackles the prose poem, linear poems, short stories, and the memoir. The stories have a poetic feel, and the setting is the island of Molokai. The characters in those stories reappear in his novels PUNAHOU BLUES and MOLOKA'I NUI AHINA. Wright won the Academy of American Poets Award, the Browning Society Award for Dramatic Monologue, and the Ann Fields Poetry Prize while attending SFSU. Frances Mayes, then Chair of the Creative Writing Department, presented him with those awards at a ceremony at the end of the year. He was the first person in the history of the school to sweep the poetry awards. He was also an Honorable Mention in Playwriting.
