With today's media setting the beauty standards for so many young American women, it is nice to have An Na's book for my students to read. Joyce has an opportunity at the end of her junior year to have some plastic surgery done as a gift from her aunt. Long unhappy with her appearance and with being second best in comparison to her "beautiful" and perfect older sister, Helen, Joyce believes everything in her life will be better if she only looked different. Her crush at school will notice her, she'll have a perfect senior year, and she'll no longer be invisible next to Helen if she were more attractive. Dealing with issues of self esteem, family, racism, and beauty, THE FOLD is a lighthearted look at some serious issues for today's teens and a nice introduction to Korean-American culture.
